My question is can i eliminate the retainer and mount the leaf springs with just the U bolts over the axle and attach the U bolts to the bottom plate that has the mounting hole for the shock. I check several suppliers and they do not sell the rubber insulator ford part number 5732. When I installed the 4.5 leaf there is a gap under the leaf and the bottom plate that has the hole for mounting the rear shock so i am missing two bottom insulators. Leaf spring pads prevent the leaf springs from making metal to metal contact and the associated noise that produces. I think this was due to the P.O not being able to put the bottom one on because of the 5 leaf spring. This retainer only had the top rubber insulator and not the bottom. Replace those original crushed rubber pads. These polyurethane pads will hold up far better than the inferior OEM pads. Your leaf springs are not especially prone to failure, but excessive rust can make them more prone to failure.

I noticed that when I was installing the new spring I have a retainer and a rubber insulator that goes under the axle and attaches to the spring and the bottom plate for the shock mount. Great for restoration, polyurethane pads are much longer lasting than O.E.M. Upgrade that faulty OE rubber with a Prothane polyurethane leaf spring pads.

Hi I just replaced my 5 leaf springs with 4.5 mid-eye springs. These mounting pads are a necessity when installing coil springs into Mustang.
